WBCA Announces Miss Basketball

Adrian Ritchie of De Pere High School has been selected as the 2009 recipient of the Miss Basketball award presented by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.  Ritchie was also named to the 2009 WBCA Division 1 All-State team as the leading vote-getter.

Ritchie, a 5-11 guard, led the Redbirds to a perfect 17-0 record in the very competitive Fox River Classic Conference, and a 23-2 mark overall.  De Pere reached the state tournament for the second consecutive season losing in the semi-finals to Milwaukee King.  Overall, De Pere has a 67-6 record in the three seasons Ritchie has been on varsity and won conference titles each year.

De Pere coach Dave Johnson was not surprised at the success Ritchie would have.  “Her leadership skills are incredible,” he said.  “The kids hang on her every word.  She is always looking out for what is best for the team and not necessarily what is best for any individual.”

Sheboygan North coach Susie Runaas has seen Ritchie up close and personal many times in the Fox River Classic Conference.  “What I’m most impressed about with her is her court vision and passing.  She handles the ball very well for her size and is an excellent passer,” Runaas said.  “It seems that she sometimes passes up shot opportunities to make that extra pass to an open teammate,” she added.

For the season Ritchie averaged 15.4 points to go along with 7.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 3.9 steals per game.

Coach Johnson summed up Adrian Ritchie’s career very well:  “She is the most complete player I have ever been around.  If she wanted to score 25 a night, she could.  If she wanted to dish out 10 assists a night, she could.  If she wanted to get 10 steals a night, she could.  She is that good in every area.”

Ritchie is the first player in De Pere history to be selected for the award, and joins Meredith Onson (Oshkosh West 2003), Anna DeForge (Niagara 1994) and Lori Goerlitz (Oshkosh North 1991) as only the fourth person from the Fox Valley / Green Bay area to earn the distinction of Miss Basketball.
