WBCA All-State - Division 3 Boys

Evan Richard from Cuba City and Jimmy Whitehead from La Crosse Aquinas tied as the top vote-getters  for the 2009 Division 3 WBCA All-State Team.  Whitehead is a repeat selection, while Richard was named to the Honorable Mention team last year.

Richard, a 6-3 junior, averaged over 24 points per game for the Cubans as they won the Southwest Activities League title.  Richard made headlines earlier this year when he scored 50 points in a WBY Shootout game versus Brookfield Academy.

Whitehead has led the Aquinas Blugolds to the state title game after the team captured a Mississippi Valley Conference title in the regular season.  The 6-1 senior poured in over 21 points per game while also playing outstanding defense and leading the team in assists and steals.

The rest of the Division 3 WBCA All-State team consists of Mike Boebel, Marshall; Jerrel Harris, Whitefish Bay Dominican; Javar Lawson, Racine St. Catherine’s; Brennan Olson, Luck; Andy Popp, Brillion; Jordan Reetz, Fall Creek; Derek Semenas, Laconia; Ben Stelzer, Roncalli; Jake Thomas, Racine St. Catherine’s.  Due to a tie, 11 players were recognized on the All-State team.

Mike Boebel of Marshall helped the Cardinals to a Capitol-South title and a trip to the sectional finals.  The 6-6 senior averaged over 19 points per game.

Jerrel Harris of Whitefish Bay Dominican averaged over 20 points per game this season.  The 5-10 senior led the Knights to an 18-5 overall record, with three of their losses coming to state title game participant Racine St. Catherine’s.

Javar Lawson was a key member of a deep and talented Racine St. Catherine’s squad that is once again in the state title game.  The 6-4 senior averaged 11.5 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds and a 58% field goal percentage.

Brennan Olson took his game to another level this year for a Luck squad that won the Lakeland-West conference title.  The 6-4 senior was a nightly highlight reel on his way to averaging over 22 points per game.

Andy Popp of Brillion repeats as a WBCA All-State selection.  The 6-4 senior led the Lions to an outright title in the very tough Olympian Conference and scored over 18 points per game.

Jordan Reetz was a big reason why the Fall Creek Crickets made a trip to the WIAA State Tournament and won an outright Cloverbelt-West title.  The 6-6 junior led the Crickets with 18.7 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.

Derek Semenas helped Laconia tie for the Flyway Conference title and will take his game to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay next year.  The 6-4 senior averaged over 23 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals per game for the Spartans.

Ben Stelzer of Roncalli was a big reason the Jets made a state tournament appearance this year.  The 6-0 sophomore poured in over 19 points per game and also shot 46.5% from behind the three-point line.

Jake Thomas of Racine St. Catherine’s led Racine St. Catherine’s to their fourth state title game in five years.  The 6-3 senior averaged 15 points per game and will attend South Dakota next year.

Voting Process
Nominees were gathered from those players that were named first-team all-conference as well as individual coach nominations, for conferences that voted after the submission deadline. Coach panels were selected by the WBCA Division Reps. WisSports.net facilitated the nomination and voting process.

Each coach on the panel selected ten boys as all-state and two for honorable mention. All-State votes were worth two points and honorable mention votes were worth one point. The top ten vote getters were named WBCA All-State. To qualify for honorable mention a player needed 3 points in Divisions 2, 3 and 4 and 5 points in Division 1.
