Maymon announced WBCA Mr. Basketball

One of the winningest players in the history of high school basketball in Wisconsin is this year’s recipient of the Mr. Basketball award, sponsored annually by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association.

Jeronne Maymon, a 6-foot-7 senior from Madison Memorial, has helped the Spartans win 93 games against just nine defeats during his stellar four-year varsity career and becomes the fourth player in the past six years from the school to win the coveted Mr. Basketball.

Maymon joins Memorial graduates Michael Nelson (2004), Wesley Matthews (2005) and Keaton Nankivil (2007) as Mr. Basketball award winners.

“The tradition that the kids follow is the best motivator that we can have and the connections the kids make back to the program has been so beneficial,” Memorial coach Steve Collins said. “It is also a credit to all of our role and practice players in giving these guys a situation to excel.”

Maymon, who will play college basketball at Marquette next year, has played a key role in helping the Spartans to appearances in the WIAA State Tournament in each of the past four years.

This year, despite often facing double and triple teams from opponents, Maymon averaged just over 17.8 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest while helping the Spartans to a Big Eight Conference championship.

“With the focus of opponents on Jeronne, the resolve he showed was admirable,” Collins said. “He seemed to not get as many calls with others being physical with him because he really improved his core strength and balance.”

Maymon averaged 19.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per contest as a junior as the Spartans finished 23-3 and lost in overtime to Wauwatosa East in the Division 1 state championship game.

As a sophomore, Maymon averaged 16.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg for a 21-3 squad while as a freshman he netted 13.0 ppg and 5.5 rpg for a team that went 24-2.

“Jeronne was the consummate senior leader this year. He could have gotten as many points as he wanted, but for the team he helped quicken the maturity and readiness of his underclassmen teammates. He was at times too unselfish, but that definitely made the team much stronger.”

The WBCA Mr. Basketball selection committee was comprised of Retired coaches Eli Crogan of Watertown, John Schell of Stevens Point, Dick Diener of Fond du Lac, Win Parkinson of Milwaukee Bradley Tech, Jim Jones of Milwaukee Hamilton, Ken Barrett of La Crosse Central, Jerry Stelse of Lake Geneva Badger and Lee Young of West Bend East.
